May is #MasturbationMonth

For as long as humans have known they could derive pleasure from touching their genitals, you can bet they’ve been doing it. Masturbation is a natural consequence of feeling sexual pleasure…the first time it happened it might have been an accident, but once felt, it’s hard to not want to experience it again. Unfortunately, as soon as we discover this wonderful new world, we are often shamed into desisting, told it’s bad, wrong, dirty, sinful. Masturbation is as healthy and natural an activity as any other, but it has long been maligned, blamed for all manner of ills from blindness to insanity, and many religions link it to sin and condemn the act. I actually found this lovely tidbit this evening as I tooled around the interwebs, looking for images of sex toys:

But sex toys have been around as long as man has had the ability to carve a piece of wood or stone into a phallic shape. I’m not even sure the concept of Satan or demons had been thought of yet…

Prehistoric phallic object most likely used as a sex toy and as a sharpening stone. No really. Don’t you use your sex toys around the house?

Another assortment of sex toys from the past…

So what’s this thing called “National Masturbation Month”? It was started in 1995 by the sex toy company Good Vibrations in an effort to combat the misinformation about masturbation, disseminate good information, start conversation about it, and in general try to destigmatize it. In their words:

We started National Masturbation Month — now International Masturbation Month with people celebrating across the globe! — to raise awareness and to highlight the importance of masturbation for nearly everyone: it’s safe, it’s healthy, it’s free, it’s pleasurable and it helps people get to know their bodies and their sexual responses. Of all the kinds of sex people can have, masturbation is the most universal and important, yet few people talk about it freely — worse, many people still feel it is “second best” or problematic in some way. Masturbation Month lets us emphasize how great it is: it’s natural, common and fun!

I couldn’t agree more, and each May I try to celebrate National Masturbation Month by writing about my own experiences with it, by talking about ways to pleasure oneself with toys, by highlighting other bloggers who discuss it in a sex-positive way, and to generally masturbate – a lot – and then to share all that yummy self-pleasuring with you.

This year my partner-in-sexual-deviancy, Viper, and I are teaming up to (hopefully) bring you a lot of good fun, as we explore the topic together. It’s still not something I always find easy to talk about, but I’ve found that my feelings of shame and/or embarrassment often fuel and inform our kink interactions, something that I will likely discuss during this month as well.

I hope you’ll join me – metaphorically (sort of!) – as I get down with some self-pleasure all this month!
